Most habits are intended to soothe, comfort or anaesthetise
Whilst habits or repetitive behaviour patterns may cause distress at the time or later, on a deeper level its 'purpose' is to soothe or bring some relief. Changing a simple habit is usually straightforward but where any underlying emotional issues are complex, it is likely to take a little longer to help make that habit or pattern a thing of the past.
